The Insight Meditation Society was founded in 1975 as a nonprofit organization to provide a place for the intensive practice of insight meditation. IMS operates a retreat center set on 80 wooded acres in the quiet country of central Massachusetts. It provides a secluded environment for intensive meditation practice.

InsightLA – Los Angeles and Southern California, USA

New York Insight Meditation Center is a non-residential meditation center that provides insight meditation retreats, courses, workshops, and other programs to people in the New York City area. Beginning and experienced meditators are welcome. NYI is a not-for-profit organization.

Seattle Insight Meditation Society – Seattle, USA

The Seattle Insight Meditation Society (SIMS) is a non-profit organization devoted to offering the Buddha’s teachings on insight and awareness to all those who seek them. SIMS offers classes in insight meditation and retreats.

Spirit Rock Meditation Center – San Francisco, USA

Spirit Rock Meditation Center is located in Woodacre in western Marin County, less than an hour north of San Francisco. The Center hosts a full program of ongoing classes, daylong retreats and residential retreats exploring the themes of meditation and its relation to life in modern society. Retreats are taught by the seventeen members of the Spirit Rock Teachers Council and by senior visiting teachers from our sister centers, Insight Meditation Society and Gaia House.

The International Meditation Centers – USA, Australia, England and Austria

There are five International Meditation Centres in the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Tradition. Each of the Centres in the West is a direct offspring of the International Meditation Centre of Yangon, Myanmar, which was founded by Sayagyi U Ba Khin. All the Centres are guided by Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin, two of Sayagyi U Ba Khin’s closest disciples, who have practised and taught meditation for more than forty years and have carried on the tradition since Sayagyi U Ba Khin’s demise in 1971.

Vipassana Metta on Maui – Maui, USA

The small vipassana retreat community on Maui conduct regular silent vipassana metta retreats: daylong, weekend, two week and an annual month long (August). We undertake cultivation of awareness through the traditional practices of generosity, moral conduct, concentration, insight and lovingkindness with the understanding that liberation of the heart brings the greatest happiness which is peace. Teachers: Kamala Masters and Steven Armstrong. Periodically other senior teachers are invited to offer the dhamma on Maui.

Madison Insight Meditation Group – USA

The Madison Insight Meditation Group is comprised of people with varying levels of training and experience in Vipassana, or Insight Meditation. They focus on the essence of the Buddha’s teachings that underlie 2500 years of cultural traditions.

Buddhism and Insight – London, England

In Kingsbury, in North West London, you can find the Sri Saddhatissa International Buddhist Centre. It is here Buddhism and Insight Meditation are taught to a wide cross section of the community by the Venerable U. Dhammasami. Although primarily focused on the Mahasi Sayadaw and the Monggut meditation techniques, the two most prominent living traditions in Burma, Ven U. Dhammasami highlights the mental flexibility, which can be gained from the practice.

Gaia House – England

A Centre for meditation, enquiry and compassion. Gaia House offers insight meditation and zen retreats throughout the year. The Centre provides comprehensive Dharma teachings and spiritual practices to realize wisdom and compassion in daily life. The Centre is not tied to any religion. The teachings explore depths of awareness and the discovery of an enlightened life.

Vipassana.com – England

Vipassana.com offers resources and support to meditators in the Theravada tradition. Several hundred people have participated in the free 10 week Online Meditation Course since it began in 1997. Led by Andrew Quernmore, a London-based meditation teacher, the course introduces both samatha and vipassana techniques and is currently available in English and Russian (Spanish and French translations are in progress).

Vipassana Meditation Centre – Singapore

The Burmese, Mahasi Sayadaw Satipatthana Vipassana tradition is followed in this centre. (Sayadaw U Pannathami stays at this centre from time to time) Transport: The nearest MRT station is Tanah Merah and the SBS Buses passing through are no. 10 and 14. Meditators are welcome to the centre anytime to practise, either individually or in groups for retreats.

Chanmyay Yeiktha – Myanmar (Burma)

Chanmyay Yeiktha (‘Peaceful Hermitage’) is a Buddhist meditation centre in Rangoon, Myanmar (Burma) where the teachers are senior Buddhist monks who teach Vipassana (Insight) meditation in Myanmar and English languages. Anyone who takes a keen interest in mental development can practise meditation here, regardless of sex, race, nationality and religion.

Panditarama Shwe Taung Gon Sasana Yeiktha – Myanmar (Burma)

Both local and foreign yogis come to the Shwe Taung Gon center in Yangon to practice intensive Vipassana meditation. The Mahasi method involves mindfulness of body, sensations, mind, and general objects such as seeing, hearing, tasting and smelling. The primary objects of meditation are the rise and fall of the abdomen in sitting meditation and the movement of the feet in walking meditation.

Stichting Inzichts Meditatie – The Netherlands

This organization promotes the practice of vipassana meditation in The Netherlands and organizes vipassana meditation retreats with teachers from the East and the West. It publishes a yearly schedule including the activities of regional centers.

The Swedish Vipassanagruppen – Sweden

Vipassanagruppen is a nonprofit organisation for people interested in insight meditation. We arrange regular sittings, seminars and retreats. Vipassana means insight. It is a meditation method taught by the Buddha around 500 BC. The purpose is to develop mindfulness here and now which leads to compassion, equanimity and enlightenment.

Passaddhi Retreat Centre – Ireland

Passaddhi, a small retreat and meditation centre in the Beara Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The meditation taught is vipassana in the tradition of the Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw (Burmese/Thai Theravadin).

The Insight Meditation Community of New Haven – New Haven, USA

The Insight Meditation Community of New Haven is a gathering of individuals who are interested in deepening our meditation practice and developing our understanding of Buddhist teachings. British Columbia Insight Mediation Society – Canada.

BCIMS, formerly Vipassana BC, is a nonprofit society based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Formed to connect and support Buddhist meditation communities in B.C. that practice in the Theravadan tradition, we provide access to teachings through classes, sitting groups and retreats, and build sangha through community events and volunteer work.

Association for Insight Meditation – England

The Association for Insight Meditation website has books in the Burmese Insight Meditation tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw, Ledi Sayadaw and Chanmyay Sayadaw. Retreats are conducted by an English monk ordained by Mahasi Sayadaw, Bhikkhu Pesala.
